“A little bit of everything all of the time
Apathy’s tragedy and boredom is a crime
A little bit of everything all of time” - Bo Burnham
“Cause it's a little bit of everything
The way you joke, the way you ache
It's getting up before you
So I can watch you as you wake
So in the day in late September
It's not some stupid little ring
I’m giving a little bit of everything” - Dawes
With the same hook phrase, both of these beautiful pieces of poetry attribute different meanings to ‘a little bit of everything’. Bo Burnham’s song uses ‘a little bit of everything’ to highlight how the internet is dominated by an unending stream of superficial bits of information that are designed to enrage, shock and upset. On the other hand, Dawes’ song and its brilliant rendition by Lizzy McAlpine points out how ‘a little bit of everything’ colours a person’s attitude towards their life. Some critics suggest that the paragraph I have quoted for you, seems like the bride-to-be isn't excited about the wedding or has resigned herself to the mundane, but I disagree. I think it illustrates how the mundane has the capacity to become magical.
We drew on both these meanings and several others, when we decided to name our blog ‘Bricolage - A little bit of everything’. Bricolage, is a word derived from French with multiple meanings, including creating art from available materials, resources ideas and thoughts. We use this word to acknowledge the different sources that inspire our ideas and thoughts, while we make our own meaning in our adventures. To us, it's a space to share our travels, thoughts, experiences and ideas. It's a creative outlet existing outside the capitalistic empire that often tries to quantify and evaluate how we spend each moment of our lives. It is a reminder to ourselves and everyone else that this is a space without an agenda, that’s freeing and accepting. It's also a reminder that this is just a tiny glimpse of our varied and interesting lives that we choose to put out there.
We plan to start by sharing our travel adventures and move into other avenues from there! Interestingly enough, Bo Burnham acknowledges that this ‘little bit of everything’ culture of instant gratification wasn’t as prominent when the internet was dominated by chat rooms and travel blogs. What better place to start, than a travel blog to pay homage to our inspiration!
