We stayed in one of the most beautiful places we have ever stayed in, in Gdańsk. The room overlooked the two most central cathedrals in Gdańsk. We were surprised it was available at the price point we were happy with. When travelling to Gdańsk, look out for rooms advertised by a hotel on Airbnb. These tend to be very inexpensive and charming rooms. Gdańsk is an unbelievably beautiful place! Here’s the itinerary we followed.

Old town apartments

It is along the riverside. Old town on one side and modern town on the other.

St. Mary’s Cathedral

St Mary’s Cathedral is a fascinating place. It is the world’s largest brick church. It also has an interesting interior, painted in stark white by Lutherans, replacing the original colourful interior to align more with their values. The ceiling is dotted with golden stars, which we read were inserted in honour of people who donate to the church. The church is also home to a unique clock made around the 1400s. Legend has it that the clock was so beautiful that the community did not want him to make another one, so they blinded him. The clockmaker killed himself by jumping from atop his creation.

St. Mary’s Gate

This gothic gate has survived centuries of prosperity and conflict to frame the Mariacka street in Gdańsk. The street is covered with gargoyle-like figures located at the entrances of shops and homes.

Prison Tower

The prison tower served many different purposes across the centuries in protecting the city as well as holding dissenters and torturing them. Currently, it is home to the Amber Museum. Amber is very popular in Poland and is sold and exhibited throughout the country's north.

Westerplatte

Westerplatte is considered to be the origin of World War 2 due to the fact that German soldiers attacked this place in September 1939. We took a bus to Westerplatte at night. We saw the entire structure lit up in the night through the wind. We saw the burials of the soldiers who had lost their lives in Westerplatte. So many of them were just our age. Young and hopeful.

Aside from these locations, we would also recommend checking.

  • Archikathedra Oliwa
  • The River Embankments
  • St. Catherine’s Church
  • European Center for Solidarity
  • St. Nicholas Church

It would be ideal to stay here for at least 2 nights to experience the city's magic!
