Lille and Luxembourg are a stone’s throw from each other, so we simply took a bus to Lille and couldn’t resist crossing the border into France. Lille originates from the word L’Île, meaning island, since it was initially located between two of the Deûle River’s tributaries. Lille is also a brilliant example of modern architecture seamlessly integrating with medieval buildings.

The most iconic architecture comes from its various churches. The Notre Dame Cathedral is perhaps the most famous. However, the Eglise Saint Maurice, a medieval catholic construction, was beyond impressive. The construction reflected the ebullience and influence of religion on state affairs in medieval France. We spent a large part of our day within the walls of this church, appreciating the intricate stained glass paintings and the sculptural edifices.

This was also Shreya’s 5th anniversary of being vegan, and we bought a couple of vegan pizzas from Domino to celebrate! The availability of vegan food worldwide has transformed over the last 5 years, as we will soon learn from our other travels!
