Our first stop in Croatia was Zagreb. The most unique feature in Zagreb is the sheer number of bizarre and unexpected museums. A connoisseur of museums would be spoilt for choice. We settled on the Museum of Broken Relationships, which houses several objects donated by people as memories from past or current relationships. It was a beautiful effort to ground the passage of a relationship in physical objects.
Zagreb also has a unique physical representation of the solar system built to scale, having the different planets scattered through the city. This makes for a fascinating walk around Zagreb. Aside from these two locations, Zagreb has a thriving street art and graffiti scene constantly evolving. We could only visit a few instances of these artworks, but check out Bright Nomad for a more exhaustive list of the street art places you should visit.
Zagreb’s court of arms is represented on the St. Mark’s church, is built in a stunning Romanesque and Gothic style and is located at the city's epicentre. St. Mark’s church is over the corner from the Zagreb Cathedral and the Archbishop's Palace, two other iconic buildings in Zagreb. On our trek to the cathedral, we chanced upon the Stone Gate, dating from the thirteenth century. Legend has it that the Virgin Mary painting here escaped unscathed after a fire in the 17th century, making it an essential place for worship.
Vegan food is more widely available in Croatia, but prices are steeper than expected. Sri Lankan Curry Bowl is a fantastic option in Zagreb, but book in advance; the place gets crowded!
